We went to a cold brew event that was the closest thing we've ever seen to a latte art competition for cold brew. It was called the Scrumdiddlyumptious Signature Cold Brew Mocktail Event Contest and was put on by Synesso and a ton of other great companies.
The event featured dozens of competitors, competing 12 at a time to make signature cold brew mocktails from a massive "pantry" of available ingredients. Each round was judged and the winners went on the complete for a huge prize pool. We wanted to share the details of this event and give credit to the creators and hosts:
JUDGING CRITERIA
On a scale of 1-10, (1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest) competitors will be judged on the following:
Knowledge of the rules: Is the correct amount of liquid used for each drink?
Preparation: What skills/techniques were used to prepare the beverage?
Presentation: Short explanation to the judges regarding the created drink and the physical presentation of the drink (garnish, cleanliness).
Balance of Flavor/Taste: How well do the variety of ingredients work together?
Inventiveness: The creativity of the drink
Use of Ingredients: Were all required ingredients used?
Cleanliness: How clean was the workstation at the end of preparation?
Time: Was the drink created and presented to the judges in the allotted time? Total time of drink preparation.
COMPETITION FORMAT – Preliminary Rounds:
Competitors will create two (2) drinks of 6 oz. of liquid for each round (one for each judge)
Each drink must contain 2-3 oz. of Anchorhead cold brew coffee or Rishi Tea.
There will be two (2) sensory judges and one (1) technical judge per head to head challenge.
Competitors must present their drinks to the judges with an explanation of ingredients used prior to the 10 minute time limit.
Length of each round: 10 minutes
Definitions
First Round: Cold Brew Based Mocktail
In this round each competitor will receive a classic cocktail concept and a list of ingredients to create a cold brew based mocktail. Competitors may utilize any ingredients in the pantry along with the required ingredients to create their take on this drink.
Second Round: Tea Based Mocktail
In this round each competitor will receive a classic cocktail concept and a list of ingredients to create a tea based mocktail. Competitors may utilize any ingredients in the pantry along with the required ingredients to create their take on this drink.
Third Round: The Wonka Drink
This round competitors must create a drink utilizing one of the four designated themes/ingredients and any pantry ingredients they wish. The competitors will create a drink using the ingredient that they were assigned when they registered: blueberry, carbonation, everlasting gobbstopper and chocolate.
Fourth Round: Ultimate Creativity
This round competitors must create a drink utilizing the pantry provided by the competition and knock the socks off of the judges. The competitor that meets the judging criteria with the best drink will move on to the finals.
COMPETITION FORMAT – The top 4 competitors will go on to compete in the Finals
This round each of the four competitors must create a drink utilizing one of the four designated themes/ingredients and pantry items as provided by the competition (each competitor will have a different ingredient). The competitors will create a drink using their assigned ingredient: blueberry, carbonation, everlasting gobbstopper and chocolate. There will be two judges; one with coffee experience and one with cocktail experience as well as the party guests. Party guests will receive a token in which they will use to vote for their favorite competitor’s drink. The competitors will create two (2) drinks (6 oz. of liquid) and 200 2oz. sample drinks for the guests. The drink that utilizes the pantry and special ingredient best will win. The final 4 contestants are encouraged to arrive at 6P and will be directed to the designated area for them to prepare their beverages.
EQUIPMENT AND INGREDIENTS
All pantry ingredients, coffee, wares and equipment will be provided for the event. No outside ingredients, wares or equipment will be allowed. Note for finals-The final 4 contestants will provide their own pantry items (Synesso will provide a cash or giftcard stipend to be allocated for pantry items. This stipend will be given to the final 4 on Friday night after the announcement of final four has been made). Wares and equipment will be provided and the final four contestants should not bring their own tools, wares or equipment.
